Fri. night saw me at a Syracuse Crunch (AHL) game vs. the Cincinatti Mighty Ducks or some such. Franchise is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and regularly puts a couple-three thousand people in the drafty old barn where a lot of the hockey scenes in slap shot were filmed.
Compare and contrast: Ticket was free. Would have been $10 if I'd actually had to pay for it.
The NBA does cameltoe better than anyone (dear NBA -- turn down the volume, but turn up the backlights behind the dance squad, please). AHL, not so much. You might have the occasional hot townie in the stands (or if you swing from the other vine, one of the team's leading Euro-defensemen in his street clothes, quietly getting assfaced all by himself 2 rows behind you.)
A hot beef sandwich with real horseradish, $4.
You can hear yourself think, and the opposing goalie can hear you yell.
Oh, and the difference-maker? You could get two 32-oz. Labatts for $10 including tip. (I did.)
Of course, if the NHL manages to screw the pooch even more completely over the next 2-3 years, there might not be any reason (or pro teams in supporting roles) for the AHL to exist any more...
But wouldn't that be a great name for a band (the Degenerate Defensemen)?
